Matt Plumb with the help of his co-driver Bob Beede driving the #29 Bill Fenton Honda Civic Si, charged his way from the 39th starting position to finish on the podium at Lime Rock over Memorial Day weekend.
Bill Fenton Motorsports unveiled its new Honda Civic Si last weekend after retiring the #27 & #29 Acura RSX. Despite being virtually untested the car quickly showed its potential. " The car got better and better every session." noted Plumb. " Steve Wheeler and the rest of the team do a great job preparing these cars and it showed. In a very short time we were able to get the cars running very competitive times. It wasn't the fastest car out there but as always it was consistent."
After missing much of the abbreviated qualifying session the team was forced to start Saturdays race in the 39th position. This did not stop the charge of Bob Beede who quickly moved his way up through the field and then turned the car over to Plumb just after the first hour. "Steve Wheeler made a good call to come in early although we counted on more yellows to get us to the end on fuel." stated Plumb. "Although we were never the fastest car over one lap we were able to keep a steady pace and make our way to the front."
With ten minutes to go Plumb found himself in 4th place with a few lapped cars between him and the #86 car of Pierre Kleinubing. " I knew that even if I caught Pierre it was going to be a whole other task to get by him. In the last few laps I just hung back, saved the car and watch to see where I was quicker. On the last lap I used up what was left of the car and was able to get up alongside exiting west bend. He gave me room and I was able to get to the finish line first!"
Plumb and Beede will co-drive the #29 Honda Civic Si in the next round at Mosport.
